To my new students and their families:

First, please allow me to thank you for your warm welcome and for the opportunity to learn with you. The Kiva community is wonderful and I'm grateful to be part of it.

I know change can be difficult, but it can also be exciting. For our first week, we have been working on how to write a 'how to' paper. Each student is focusing on a topic they know well so they can write step-by-step instructions on how to do it. In class, we had a demonstration on the importance of stating each step as we tried to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The students learned that they needed to state each step clearly or the sandwich would not turn out quite like they expected! We will continue with the revisions and editing of their papers next week and will post the finished papers on our Kiva Stars wall in the classroom.

As you will notice on the site, the spelling words for each unit will be updated so students can study their words without having to bring home their text each day. This should help keep their backpacks from getting too heavy!

In math we are working on division and alternate methods for finding answers to word problems. As we progress through the curriculum, it becomes more and more important that students know their 'times tables' so if your child has not yet mastered them, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. This is one skill that will always be helpful. Additionally, we will continue Math Club on Tuesdays after school until 3:30 (although the last one lasted until 4:00 - multiples of 10 proved to be a bit of a challenge.) This next week I plan to have math games in addition to extra help so any and all students are invited and encouraged to attend. I hope the students will learn to love math as much as I do, or at least be able to have some fun with it.

We are looking forward to our next science unit on Structures of Life. The crayfish and snails are scheduled to be delivered and the students are excited to meet their new 'critter friends.'  I'm sure they'll have some wonderful stories to share with you about their adventures with these critters.

We also took our science benchmark tests this week. The results are scheduled to be posted January 15. As a 'preview of coming attractions' the fifth grade classes invited us to the launch of their hot air balloons and we agreed it was a site to behold. Most of the students are anxious to build their own balloons next year to see if theirs will fly even higher.

I will try to post a weekly planner of the work and homework for each subject as soon as I am able to master how to attach documents to the web site. I appreciate your patience and hope it won't take too long!

My SUSD email is now active and I look forward to hearing from you with any questions or concerns you may have. I will respond to emails as quickly as possible.

Again, thank you for welcoming me into your (our) community. I am proud to be Kiva's newest member!
